Life in the mountains is to be enjoyed, and there are few better stops for year-round recreation than Snoqualmie Pass. Home to The Summit at Snoqualmie, the closest ski area to Seattle, homes here vary from condominiums to elegant chalets and log cabin manses. The fun doesn’t stop when the temperatures heat up, as mountain bikers, hikers and climbers flock to the Pass when the snow melts. With I-90 running through the area, its easy access is just the icing on the cake of this outdoor community. The year-round population is about 300 and growing. About The Summit

As one of the region’s most accessible mountains, The Summit serves as a baseline for fun at any skill level. The Summit at Snoqulamie officially opened in 1937, but ski pioneers have been reveling on the slopes since the 1920’s. With intrigue growing among ski jumpers and spectators, the Seattle Parks Department opted to apply for a permit in 1933. Since then, The Summit has become a staple for Seattle area residents and visitors alike.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

The Summit History

dave-hoefler-RdnUGPRTxkA-unsplash

Snoqualmie Pass has been one of the Pacific Northwest’s most influential areas since the 1800s. Interstate-90 serves as an arterial route connecting Seattle to Eastern Washington, and the region’s recreational areas date back to the early 1930’s. Learn more about how The Summit we know today was built.

A Rich History

The evolution of transit over the Pass began in the 1800s. Before modern transportation was built, Native Americans' traversed the mountains by foot through several paths and advised early surveyors on which route to take. Originally declared unpassable, railroad companies were first to embark on a thoroughfare and shortly after a wagon trail was constructed where today’s Interstate-90 lays. Today the history shines through with landmarks, waterways, roads, and trails having namesakes from the early settlement days.

Alpental: The Beginning

In 1967 Bob Mickelson and James Griffin founded Alpental. Despite naysayers they worked alongside one another and ultimately curated one of our regions most desired areas for adventurous skiers and snowboarders. Today Alpental serves as one of Snoqualmie Pass’s must-haves with over 500 acres of backcountry and steep terrain, and it’s story serves as an inspiration. Explore Griffin’s account of the discovery and actualization of this Pacific Northwest Gem.
