Life on Mercer Island
Mercer Island is arguably one of our region’s best places to live. It has served as our home base for years and as island experts, we’re here to provide details on the area with suggested amenities, details for those moving here and more.
While it is surrounded by Lake Washington, Mercer Island is far from insular. Located between Bellevue and Seattle affords an easy commute to either the east or west side. Waterfront homes are marked by their own private docks for aquatic adventurers to voyage out on a boat or paddleboard. Because of its island character, there is a strong sense of community as “Islanders” take pride in the small-town atmosphere, tranquil and woodsy ambiance.
Mercer Island’s roots date back to the Duwamish Indians. In early days settlers were hesitant to inhabit the area, as it was believed the island was ridden with an evil spirit.
Today the vibrant area is known to be one of the best places to live in the Pacific Northwest. Four mild seasons are seen throughout the year, and the beauty of the region is effervescent.
With a population of over 25,000 the island is composed of over 10,000 households. The United States Census Bureau last reported median household income of $147K, with over 78% of residents having earned a Bachelor’s degree or higher education.
Meet Mercer Island’s oldest business. Constructed in 1914, the Inn is a classic location to meet friends and celebrate any occasion. The menu includes burgers, sandwiches, appetizers, and an exhaustive list of beer, wine, and cocktails. An extensive patio with covered seating is primed for summer evenings, and COVID-friendly protocol is keeping this local favorite open through this unprecedented time. Cheers to your next night out!

One of Seattle’s lunchtime favorites is available on the island. Enjoy a myriad of salads, sandwiches and soups primed for mid-day eating.
Local pizza is brought to life by Mioposto. Shareables, salads, and sandwiches are on the menu, but the open-flame pizza is the showstopper.
Bringing people together and building community through food, allister is a neighborhood restaurant and cocktail bar located in beautiful Downtown Mercer Island, Washington. We offer simple American cuisine with an emphasis on Northwest seasonal ingredients, inspired by French and Asian influences.
Mercer Island provides offerings that are suited for all. Various clubs, groups, parks, and trails offer a sense of community with opportunities to socialize with neighbors.
Education is paramount to the community at large, as Mercer Island’s top-rated public school system is ranked second in the state. Its most famous resident was Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. Though it is home to the wealthiest zip code in Washington state, residents and visitors enjoy friendly, community oriented events year-round.
